C-UAS · DEVELOPMENT KITPrototype anti-drone laser turret, sold as a build kit

The bench platform we develop counter-UAS tracking on, sold as the complete build. A camera, a trained neural network and a real-time motion controller on a printed pan-tilt: it detects a target, locks on, and keeps the head centred on it while it moves. The only laser on it is an eye-safe visible designator for marking the aimpoint.

This is a precision detection-and-tracking platform, not a weapon. It is the platform we develop counter-UAS tracking on, built from accessible parts and 3D-printed structure, driven by an embedded vision pipeline and a real-time motion controller. Click a target to designate it, or let the model acquire it on its own; the head slews across, locks, and holds the target centred as it moves — following the motion rather than chasing behind it. We are making the current build available as a complete, documented kit: the bill of materials, our own CAD, the firmware, the vision software and the wiring guide, so you can build and run the exact system we run. It is an actively developed prototype and we sell it as exactly that.

Design intent

0101 / 06

The tracking is the product

Everything here exists to answer one question: can a small machine find a moving target, decide it is the right one, and stay pointed at it? The pan-tilt, the belt reduction and the motion controller are in service of that. Nothing on the mount is an effector.

0202 / 06

Follows, rather than chases

A tracker that reacts to where the target was will always trail it. The filtered track drives the head ahead of the target instead, which is the difference between a lock that holds and one that oscillates behind the motion.

0303 / 06

Designate by hand or let it acquire

Click a target and it takes it. Leave it alone and the trained model finds one on its own. Both paths end in the same tracker, so the autonomy is a choice about who picks the target, not a different mode of operation.

0404 / 06

It measures itself

Per-frame tracking error, latency and lock state are logged, and a report is produced after every run. Performance is therefore something you measure on your own bench rather than something we claim in a brochure.

0505 / 06

Accessible parts, printed structure

Stepper motors, a slewing ring, a toothed belt and a printed frame. It is built from things you can order, which is what makes it a kit rather than a demonstration, and the CAD comes with it so you can change the frame.

0606 / 06

Sold mid-development, and labelled as such

This is the working rig we use, documented well enough to build, understand and extend. It tracks, it locks and it logs, and it is under continuous improvement while we test. If you need a turnkey guaranteed product, this is not that yet.

How it works

N.01

Why we are selling the bench platform

Counter-UAS tracking is developed on hardware, not in a simulator. A tracking loop that looks convincing against synthetic motion falls apart the first time it meets belt backlash, motor step noise, rolling shutter and a target that changes direction faster than the controller can settle.

So we built a rig to develop against, and kept building it. It is the platform we develop counter-UAS tracking on, at a scale you can put on a desk and break without consequence.

We are making the current build available as a complete, documented kit. Not a teaching model of the real thing — the actual rig, with the actual software, and the documentation to build it.

N.02

What the lasers are, and what they are not

There are two visible lasers on the head, one green and one blue. Both are eye-safe designators at 5 mW or below, and their only job is to mark where the head is pointing so you can see the tracking working with your own eyes rather than through a log file.

That is the entire extent of the directed-energy content. No other effector is included and none is supported. This is a detection-and-tracking platform, and describing it as anything else would be a misrepresentation of what is in the box.

It is worth stating plainly because the phrase anti-drone turret invites a different assumption. The hard, interesting and genuinely unsolved part of counter-UAS is upstream of any effector, and that upstream part is what this kit is.

N.03

Performance you verify rather than take on trust

The system instruments itself. Per-frame tracking error, loop latency and lock state are logged as it runs, and a report is generated at the end of every run.

On our setup it holds a moving target tightly, redirects between targets in well under two seconds, and runs a full detect-track loop at camera frame rate. Those are our numbers on our bench, with our tuning and our lighting, and we publish them as exactly that.

Yours will differ, which is the point of shipping the instrumentation with the kit. You can reproduce the measurement, change something, and see whether it got better.

N.04

Who this is for

Robotics builders who want a real, working tracking platform instead of starting from zero. Computer-vision researchers who need a physical testbed for detection and tracking algorithms rather than another dataset.

Students and educators working on control systems, real-time vision or embedded motion control, where the value is in a machine that can be taken apart and put back together.

And counter-UAS developers evaluating a tracking layer to build on, who would rather start from something that already closes the loop in hardware.

Employment

Where it is used

  • 02Computer-vision research testbeds

What it will not do

Every sensing method has a blind spot. These are HEIMDAL PROTOTYPE’s, stated plainly. A capability you find out about in the field is worse than one you were told about here.

It is a prototype, and it is sold as one

It works: it tracks, it locks and it logs. It is also under continuous improvement while we test, which means behaviour, tuning and documentation change between builds. If you need a turnkey guaranteed product, this is not that yet.

There is no effector, and there is no path to one here

The head is built around a camera and two visible designators, and the bracket, the power budget and the licence all assume exactly that. Fitting anything else is outside what this kit supports and outside what it is sold for.

Our benchmarks are ours

The performance figures are measured on our setup, with our tuning, camera, lighting and target. They are a starting point and a method, not a specification. Reproduce them on your bench before relying on them.

You are building it

This is a bill of materials, a set of printable parts, software and a guide. It assumes you can order components, run a printer, wire a driver board and read a stack trace. Support is best-effort.

The licence is private

Buyers may not redistribute the CAD, the code or the guides, and may not use them commercially. If you need a commercial licence, that is a separate conversation rather than something the kit grants.

Questions

Asked and answered

What buyers ask about passive detection, answered without the hedging. Anything not covered here, put to us directly.

Ask us something else
Q.01Is this a weapon?

No. The only laser on it is an eye-safe visible designator at 5 mW or below, for marking the aimpoint so you can see the tracking working. No other effector is included and none is supported. What you are buying is a detection-and-tracking platform.

Q.02How is this different from HEIMDAL?

HEIMDAL is the fixed-site counter-UAS system, with an effector. This is a desk-scale detection-and-tracking platform sold as a documented build kit, and the only laser on it is an eye-safe designator. Same problem, very different machine.

Q.03What exactly do I receive?

Six things: the bill of materials, the 3D CAD files for the frame, the 3D assembly guide, the wiring guide, the code, and the software guide. All of it under a private licence — your own use, not commercial, not for redistribution.

Q.04Do I have to build it myself?

Yes. This is a builder's kit: you order the components, print the frame, wire it and run it, with the documentation to do so. That is also why the CAD and the source are included rather than withheld.

Q.05How does it acquire a target?

Either way you like. Click a target to designate it, or let the trained neural network acquire one on its own. Both feed the same tracker.

Q.06How fast is it?

On our setup it runs a full detect-track loop at camera frame rate and redirects between targets in well under two seconds. It logs per-frame tracking error and latency as it runs, so you can measure the same things on yours rather than take our word for it.

Q.07Can I use it commercially?

Not under the licence supplied. The kit comes with a private licence: no redistribution and no commercial use. A commercial licence is a separate conversation.

Q.08What support comes with it?

Best-effort. This is an actively developed prototype sold as a builder's kit, not a warrantied product, and we would rather say so plainly than discover it together later.

Q.09What is the price?

It is on the order sheet at the foot of this page, along with what you receive and on what terms. If there is no order sheet there, we have not published a price yet — ask and we will quote you.
