A heavy-lift carrier that flies a metal target built to look like a hostile drone, loaded with clay pigeons. Gunners engage a realistic aerial threat with live shot, and score it by the clays they break.
Counter-drone gunnery has an obvious problem: you cannot practise on the thing you are trying to hit. GARM carries a steel-plate replica of a hostile drone, fitted with clay pigeons, and flies it through a realistic profile. Shot breaks the clays and rings off the plate, so the target survives the engagement and the score is visible from the ground.
Practise on the actual problem
A drone-shaped target moving on a drone-like profile is a different training problem from a towed sleeve or a thrown clay. Gunners learn the lead and the sight picture that the real threat demands.
The target survives being shot
Steel plate takes the hits and comes home. The consumables are clay pigeons, which is a cost measured in pennies rather than in written-off target drones.
The score is visible
Broken clays are unambiguous feedback from the firing point — no telemetry, no adjudication, no argument about whether that was a hit.
